Three Tiznows in Second Breeders' Cup Dirt MileRace Favorite Well Armed, Slew's Tizzy, and Slew's Tiznow All FadedNov 19, 2008 BarbaraAnne Helberg
The Breeders' Cup World Championships was a potential showcase for sons of the great Tiznow in the second annual Dirt Mile. None showed the killer kick of their daddy.
Three Tiznow sons with a combined record of five wins from 11 starts lined up in the starting gate and revved their engines for a mile chase on real dirt in the second ever Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, the third race of the October 25th BC World Championships card at Santa Anita, California. One son, Well Armed, was prepped to become a loose cannon. Well Armed was the race favorite who already had scored over California-based Albertus Maximus by 1-3/4 miles in the September 27 Goodwood Stakes (G-1) on the Santa Anita Pro-Ride surface. Complete Order of Finish 2008 BC Dirt MileThe complete order of finish of the 2008 BC Dirt Mile, along with the entrants' season race records prior to the race, and their pedigrees and jockeys, follows:
Maximus Maximized BankrollAlbertus Maximus maximzed his earnings bankroll to a cool $908,230 with his BC Dirt Mile victory. Bred in Kentucky, the four-year-old hails from California tracks, where he has started all 15 of his career races. At three, Albertus Maximus posted a two-win, three-placed year. As a juvenile, he started just once. Maximum Physiology for MaximusTrainer Vladimir Cerin has a degree in kinesiology from UCLA. Human exercise physiology is part of his training regimen for the Thoroughbreds in his stable. The owner of Albertus Maximus, Marianne Chase, a former dressage and jump rider who owns Albertus Maximus with her husband, Brandon, looked around for a special someone to take over maximum training for the blossoming Thoroughbred. Maximus Used Breathing ChamberCerin uses a hyperbaric chamber, a machine pitched to raise the levels of oxygen in humans. The oxygen booster works just as well with animal athletes, Cerin declares. Bone and tendon tissue require great amounts of oxygen to heal, Cerin explained recently in a The Blood-Horse interview. The hyperbaric chamber enhances oxygen-healing flow. Before turning his attention to Thoroughbred racing in 1981, Cerin worked with NBA stars to increase oxygen supply. To Denmark native Marianne Chase, who is accustomed to going for the gusto, it all makes maximum sense. Tiznow's Sons Couldn't Mount ChargePerhaps it was a lack of oxygen. None of Hall of Famer Tiznow's sons seriously menaced in the BC Dirt Mile behind large-breathing Albertus Maximus. All three took very wide trips around the turns and gassed out when energy was needed the most. A puff here, and a puff there, and the winner was in the circle where first place wreaths are handed out.
