Knowing his Thoroughbred from every angle helped jockey Terry Thompson get Payton d' Oro to the winner's circle for trainer Larry Jones on Black-Eyed Susan day.

Larry Jones-trained Friesan Fire may have frozen in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes this season, but Jones has a crop of strong fillies participating in what has been annoucned as his last season run with a large stable.

Jones and his wife have indicated that it's time for a scale down in their lives as Thoroughbred conditioners. Friesan Fire was said to be the Joneses' last Derby entry. Where they go with their fillies is yet to be determined.

Black-Eyed Susan Race Results

May 15, the Friday before Preakness Stakes day, attracted a crowd of 23,892 who made Casanova Move the favorite in the filly equivalent to the colts' Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The $150,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) was the day's featured race at 1-1/8 miles for a field of eight three-year-old fillies.

Payton d' Oro, ridden by regular jockey Terry Thompson, fired in the stretch to draw away by 1-1/4 lengths from Bon Jovi Girl. Casanova Move finished third, but was well back by another 5-1/4 lengths.

Thompson piloted Payton d' Oro through her three-win Oaklawn Park campaign.

Jones described his winner as a "very talented" individual with "a great future". Payton d' Oro covered the fast dirt track in 1:49.75. She had taken the first lead in :24.21 and held it throughout over stalker Stage Trick.
