Ninth Client Boosts D. Wayne Lukas BC StartersTwo-Year-Old Had No Money Rally But Pedigree May Show Next YearNov 16, 2008 BarbaraAnne Helberg
Although unable to rally for a money place in the BC Juvenile Turf, D. Wayne Lukas-trained Ninth Client is well-pedigreed for a sophomore challenge at Churchill Downs.
In the home stretch approach of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf October 25 at Santa Anita Park, a schoolee of D. Wayne Lukas, who has more BC wins than any other trainer, Ninth Client, followed up a game pace chase with no strong rally in the final furlongs, and came home, appropriately enough for the moment, ninth. The well-pedigreed colt, however, may show up on the Kentucky Derby dirt trail in 2009. Ninth Client's daddy is Malibu Moon, the best sire produced by the prolific sire of sires A.P. Indy. D. Wayne knows his prospects, and he has chosen the right ones for a leading 18 wins, 20 seconds, and 15 thirds in Breeders' Cup competitions. That's a wipeout record among leading trainers. The next closest fellow trainers are merely in single digit win-place-show columns. In addition, Lukas has brought in nine (tied with Robert "Bobby" J. Frankel) 4th place finishers, and a superior twelve 5ths and twelve 6ths. Here, too, everyone else follows far back in single digit placings. Complete Order of Finish in the 2008 BC Juvenile TurfFollowing is the complete order of finish of the 2008 BC Juvenile Turf, along with the contestants' 2008 race records prior to the BC, their pedigrees, and jockeys:
One-Two Foreign Punch in BC Juvenile TurfThe Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf was one of three races on BC weekend that produced a one-two foreign winners punch. Donativum hails from Great Britain, while Ireland's Westphalia, never worse than second in six encounters, placed second. The males' Turf, for three-year-olds and up, saw the same one-two finish in reverse order: Ireland's Conduit led the way and Great Britain's Eagle Mountain went runner-up. In the boys' Classic, Raven's Pass and Henrythenavigator, both bred in Kentucky but England-based, returned to America to score in first and second order, respectively. Ninth Client's Jockey, LeparouxLast season, Julien Leparoux rode the winner to the first ever Juvenile Turf event in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. He guided Nownownow under the wire in front. Lukas Also Leads in TC RacesAn educated guess would say the winning Lukas has brought in a bevy of Triple Crown race winners, as well, and that would be correct. Lukas has won 13 individual TC races, a record head and shoulders above anyone else. It would make perfect sense to see Ninth Client improve next year on the TC trail.
