Kentucky Derby betters this season could go with horses named for owner logic, or cleverness, or mysteriousness, or just for fun. Poni Colada gets the fun title.

Kentucky Derby betters looking for that angle, or connection might find encouragement in the names of horses that are owner logical, or mysterious, or clever, or just for fun. Attention-getting names usually attract serious betters as well as the general public. Poni Colada, for instance, gets noticed.

Poni Colada would seem to have the season's just for fun name tightly nailed down.

Remember the song? Poni has thus far had his own brand of fun, winning the Borderland Stakes Feb.16 at Sunland Park, NM, and placing second in the Northern Spur at Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, AZ on Apr.12, guided by Robby Albarado. Steve Asmussen trains the colt.

Poni is a Volponi son out of Coconut Willamina, by Pleasant Colony. That's pretty heady siredom for such a fun fellow.

Foxysox gets the runner-up just for fun spot.

Trained by Carla Gaines and ridden by Victor Espinoza, Foxysox, a 5-year-old mare, rebounded from last year's health issues to hit the wire first in the Santa Barbara Handicap Apr.19. The name couldn't get the owner logical vote because Foxysox has no socks. She's all chestnut from neck to hoof.

For cleverness in a name, Icabad Crane can make the best claim.

Jeremy Rose -- remember Jeremy from the afleet afoot incident in the 2005 Preakness Stakes with Afleet Alex? -- guided Icabad to a less than length win in the Apr.19 Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore, MD. Graham Motion trains Icabad, or good, that is.

Mad Flatter cannot be overlooked here for a strong second place showing in the cleverness category. The colt has a triumph this season. He placed third in the Lecomte Stakes run Jan.12 at The Fair Grounds, New Orleans, LA.

That leaves Behindatthebar for the secretive/mystery title.Coming into his own late this season, Behindatthebar ran down the leader late in the Lexington Stakes, Apr.19 at Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, KY. He hundered up to the winner's circle after being behind most of the field in the early going. He's a Todd Pletcher trained colt. Veteran David Flores has the saddle.

That leaves the secretive mystery -- what's Behindatthebar behind at?

Bob Black Jack has the owner logical name covered.

This colt's owners crammed everyone's name into his. BBJ has been on and off the Kentucky Derby bubble with just enough graded stakes earnings to qualify if one current contender opts out. James Kasparoff schools BBJ, and he's piloted by Richard Migliore.

No matter what the slant, there's a horse's name waiting for every better.
