Three outstanding Kentucky Derby champions from the 1980s were fillies Genuine Risk (1980) and Winning Colors (1988), and Alysheba (1987), who won after throat surgery.

Hall of Fame Thoroughbreds Genuine Risk, Winning Colors, and Alysheba earned their eventual Hall inductions in 1986, 2000, and 1993, respectively, in racing careers that highlighted the 1980s.

A giant son of Alydar, Alysheba beat the Kentucky Derby competition of 1987 after corrective surgery solved breathing difficulties he suffered from a blocked epiglottis. Genuine Risk whalloped her rivals in the 1980 Derby, and Winning Colors outlasted a class act of colts that included Forty-Niner, Seeking the Gold, and Risen Star in the 1988 classic.
